Birth trauma can happen regardless of the type of birth that brought the baby into the world, and is vastly under publicized and under treated.

In a recent study 1,250 newborns were examined within the first 5 days of life (most being within the first 24 hours).

They found that 90% of babies suffered some type of birth trauma resulting in strain through the neck or cranial areas. 10% of babies were born with freely mobile cranial areas. 10% experienced severe trauma to the head noticeable even to untrained observers, and the other 78% showed varying levels of strain.

When the nervous system is under strain and stress it affects every system of the body. It is because of this that the effects of birth trauma, if left uncorrected, are far reaching and can be devastating.

The average newborn’s brain is about a quarter of the size of the average adult brain. In their first year of life it will have completely doubled in size. By age three their brain will be 80% of an adult size brain, 90% by age five! There is no other time in life where neurological growth happens this rapidly.

When birth trauma is left unaddressed, it can be a factor in the development of many common childhood conditions. For many of the kiddos in our office, this can look like recurrent ear infections, breastfeeding issues, respiratory difficulties, colic, asthma, acid reflux, allergies, torticollis, learning disabilities, bedwetting, and much more.

The good news is that kids are incredibly resilient once they receive the support their body needs through gentle and specific, scientific chiropractic adjustments. The doctors in our office have special training to be able to effectively adjust newborns and children to make sure that they are able to thrive during their most formative years.
